Fixed Bed Assist VS HealthCraft Smart-Rail System Adequate Standing Support

Fixed Bed Rails support is positioned behind the user, which isn’t safe or ergonomic. The Smart-Rail unlocks from the side of the rail and pivots out to create a comfortable and ergonomic weight-bearing support. This allows support to be located beside the user (i.e cane) or in front (i.e walker).

Ergonomic Gripping And Support With Both Hands

Fixed Bed Rails in line with the mattress do not provide ergonomic support. Undue strain is placed on the elbow when gripping the rail and the unsupported hand is often required to push off the mattress (which will compress the weight). With Smart-Rail both hands can easily access the rail in front.

Optimal Support

Fixed Bed Rails require reaching and twisting to grab the support rail with 2 hands. This moves the center of gravity outside the foot stance leading to unbalanced sitting or standing and increased risk of fall and injury. The Smart-Rail can be placed in front to provide optimal support.

Usable Gripping Surface

Fixed Bed Rails usually have bed pockets that can interfere with proper gripping and reduce the gripping surface. The Smart-Rail has an uninterrupted gripping surface of 16.5″/419mm. This allows for exact placement to maximize leverage and strength.

Wider Support Frame & Safety Strap

Fixed Bed Rails usually are the same width as the rail handle and many do not come with straps for attaching to the box spring which means there is a limited support frame to secure the rail. The Smart-Rail frame is up to 50% wider & includes safety strap, providing increased stability for the user.

Universal Mattress Compatibility

Fixed Bed Rails usually come with a limited height for mattress thickness. Depending on the mattress height the rail may be too high (increased risk of bed entrapment) or too low (barely above the mattress). The Smart-Rail fits mattress size up to 22″ thick, and legs adjust based on user needs.

Can I install the Smart-Rail if there is no box spring?

Yes – in most cases. There must be a flat and secure surface for the mattress and bed rail frame to rest on (i.e. a plywood panel). If the flat surface has gaps or holes, the bed rail frame could drop through, twist or become unstable.

Does the Smart-Rail lock when pivoted out in the open position?

No, the rail doesn’t lock when open. It allows the user move the rail for support throughout their range of motion.

How much space do I need to have between the top of the mattress and the top of the rail?

The Smart-Rail is height adjustable, but we suggest a maximum rail height setting of 4″ / 10.2cm.
